Cylinder Axial Stress

Axial Stress Equation

$$ {\sigma}_a = \frac{P \cdot r}{2t} $$ where:

σa   =   Axial Stress   (N/m² or Pa)

P   =   Internal Pressure   (N/m² or Pa)

r   =   Internal radius of cylinder   (m)

t   =   Wall thickness   (m)

Equation Assumptions

  • The wall thickness is much smaller than the internal radius (typically t < r/10).
  • The internal pressure is distributed uniformly.
  • The material of the vessel is homogeneous and isotropic.
