Turn Radius Calculator

How This Is Calculated

$$ R = \frac{V^2}{g tan \phi} $$ where:

R   =   Turn radius   (m)

V   =   Aircraft velocity   (m/s)

g   =   Gravitational acceleration   (m/s²)

φ   =   Bank angle   (rad)

Assumptions

  • The aircraft is in a steady, coordinated turn.
  • The speed and altitude of the aircraft remain constant.
  • Airodynamic forces are ideal.
  • Air is incompressible.
  • Centripetal force is entirely provided by the horizontal component of lift.
