Debye Length Calculator

How This Is Calculated

$$ \lambda_D = \sqrt{ \frac{\epsilon_0 k_B T_e}{n_e e^2} } $$ where:

λD   =   Debye length   (m)

ε0   =   Permittivity of free space   (8.854 x 10-12 F/m)

kB   =   Boltzmann constant   (1.381 x 10-21 J/K)

Te   =   Electron temperature   (K)

ne   =   Electron density   (electrons/m³)

e   =   Elementary charge   (1.602 x 10-19 C)

Assumptions

  • Plasma is uniform and electron density is consistent.
  • Temperature effects on the electron distribution are neglected.
  • Collisional effects between electrons and ions are negligible.
  • The plasma remains incompressible.
