Hardness (Brinell) Calculator

How This Is Calculated

$$ BHN = \frac{2 P}{\pi D (D-\sqrt{D^2-d^2})} $$ where:

BHN   =   Brinell Hardness Number   (BHN)

P   =   Applied Load   (N)

D   =   Diameter of indenter   (m)

d   =   Diameter of indentation   (m)

Assumptions

  • The material behaves linearly and elastically.
  • Deformations are small (for large strains the linear relationship between shear stress and strain may not hold).
  • Material is homogeneous.
  • The material is isotropic.
