How This Is Calculated



$$ t_s = C \left(\frac{V}{A}\right)^n $$ where:

ts   =   Solidifcation time   (s)

V   =   Volume of the casting   (m³)

A   =   Surface area of the casting   (m²)

C   =   Mold constant   (s/m³)

n   =   Exponent typically between 1.5-2   (dimensionless)


Assumptions



  • Heat transfer is uniform.
  • Conduction is the dominant mode of heat transfer.
  • The mold and casting are in thermal equalibrium.
  • There are no external cooling or heating effects.
