Bending Stress of a Shaft Calculator

How This Is Calculated

$$ \sigma = \frac{M \cdot c}{I} $$ where:

σ   =   Bending stress   (Pa)

M   =   Bending moment   (Nm)

c   =   Distance from the neutral axis   (m)

I   =   Moment of inertia   (m4)

Assumptions

  • The shaft experinces small deflections relative to its length.
  • The material behaves elastically.
  • The shaft is experiencing pure bending.
  • The cross-section remains uniform along the shafts length.
