Natural Frequency of a Shaft for Torsional Vibration Calculator

How This Is Calculated

$$ f_n = \frac{1}{2 \pi} \sqrt{\frac{G \cdot J}{\rho \cdot L^4}} $$ where:

fn   =   Natural Frequency   (Hz)

G   =   Shear Modulus   (Pa)

J   =   Polar Moment of Inertia   (m4)

ρ   =   Density   (kg/m³)

L   =   Length of the shaft   (m)

Assumptions

  • The shaft experinces small deflections relative to its length.
  • The material behaves elastically.
  • The shaft is experiencing pure torsion.
  • Damping effects are neglected.
