Fracture Toughness Calculator

FHow This Is Calculated

$$ K_{IC} = Y \sigma \sqrt{\pi a} $$ where:

KIC   =   Fracture Toughness   (Pa m1/2)

Y   =   Dimensionless Geometric Factor   (Dimensionless)

σ   =   Applied Stress   (Pa)

a   =   Crack Length   (m)

Assumptions

  • The material behaves linearly and elastically.
  • Deformations are small (for large strains the linear relationship between shear stress and strain may not hold).
  • Material is homogeneous.
  • The material is isotropic.
