Shear Stress in a Shaft Calculator

How This Is Calculated

$$ \tau = \frac{T \cdot r}{J} $$ where:

τ   =   Shear stress   (Pa)

T   =   Torque on the shaft   (Nm)

J   =   Polar moment of inertia   (m4)

r   =   Radius of the shaft   (m)

Assumptions

  • The shaft material is homogeneous.
  • The material behaves elastically.
  • The deformations do not change the shaft geometry.
  • There are no stress concentrations.
