Pressure Ratio Across a Normal Shock Calculator

How This Is Calculated

$$ \frac{p_2}{p_1} = 1 + \frac{2 \gamma}{\gamma + 1} (M_1^2 - 1) $$ where:

p1   =   Static pressure before the shock   (kg/m³)

p2   =   Static pressure after the shock   (kg/m³)

M1   =   Mach Number   (Dimensionless)

γ   =   Ratio of Specific Heats   (Dimensionless)

Assumptions

  • The fluid is compressible.
  • The flow is isentropic.
  • The system is in steady-flow.
  • The fluid behaves as an ideal gas.
  • There is no external work or heat transfer.
