Shrinkage Allowance (Thermal Expansion) Calculator

How This Is Calculated

$$ \Delta L = L_0 \cdot \alpha \cdot \Delta T $$ where:

Δ L   =   Shrinkage   (m)

L0   =   Original length   (m)

α   =   Coefficient of thermal expansion   (K-1)

Δ T   =   Change in temperature   (K)

Assumptions

  • The relationship between the change in length and change in temperature is linear.
  • The material is homogeneous.
  • Coefficient of thermal expansion remains constant.
  • No internal stress effects are considered.
